‘I MUST CONGRATULATE N.A.R.P.A. AS IT CELEBRATES ITS THIRD ANNIVERSARY’ says Prof. Ph.D ERNEST H. LATHAM Jr.

ERNEST H. LATHAM Jr

It was a big event in ‘Club A’ from Bucharest on the 17th of April: Professor
Ph.D ERNEST H. LATHAM Jr. from the U.S.A. was invited (together with
IOANA IERONIM from Romania) at ‘Cafeneaua critica’ (‘Critics’ Café‘)
in ‘Club A’ (host Professor Pd.D ION BOGDAN LEFTER).
It was A MAGIC EVENING which offered to us (journalists, students, writers so on) a
chance to find a lot of interesting things from ‘Ceausescu’s regime’ ( as the
American diplomat Professor ERNEST H. LATHAM Jr. was Cultural Attaché in Bucharest
before 1989). It was a MAGIC ROMANIAN AMERICAN EVENING (with a magic mixture of issues: history, diplomacy, literature, poetry so on).
I used this opportunity to offer to Professor ERNEST H. LATHAM Jr. a poetry book
(‘Carate de septembrie’ /’September Carats’/, which includes poems in memory of
9/11 , a book written by me and a poet from Cleveland, Ohio, MIRCEA STEFAN; our
book was launched at ‘TASTE OF ROMANIA’ Festival in Chicago, September, 2004). At the same time I have explained to the American guest the aims of my doctorate,
‘Transatlantic Poetry Arc: MIHAI EMINESCU – E. A. POE’ and Professor LATHAM told his opinions about POE and WHITMAN.
IOANA IERONIM (a great Romanian poet which was Romanian Cultural Attaché in
Washington) added her opinions about these two great American poets and Professor
ION BOGDAN LEFTER underlined MIHAI EMINESCU’s representativeness
for the Romanian poetry.
Of course, Professor LANTHAM told us some stories (impossible to be told before
1989) and he confessed how he discovered Romania and how he fell in love with it.
At the end of this magic evening I have asked Prof. Ph.D ERNEST H. LATHAM Jr.
to be so kind to offer a statement for N.A.R.P.A.:

‘First of all I’d like to thank N.A.R.P.A. for the work they have done and encourage them to continue it; it plays a very important role as a bridge between our two
countries.
As people who have read my recently published book are aware,
it’s a book about both countries and has a foot in both countries and
both cultures . . . We must all, including N.A.R.P.A., write, explain,
lecture and witness to the very important values we share even as we may
differ in our interpretations and explanations of the differences, and I
must congratulate N,A.R.P.A. for its efforts in this connection as it
celebrates its third anniversary. I send my hopes that it will continue
this effort for many years in the future.”

20th Century Relations between Romania and the English-Speaking World (în limba engleză, la Editura bucureşteană Vremea, 2013).

Amfitrion: Ion Bogdan Lefter.
